Becoming a Life Saver

WINDANG SURF LIFE SAVING

All Surf Life Savers who patrol Windang Beach are volunteers. We do this, because we are passionate about being safe when visiting and swimming at our beach, and because we want to give back to the community that has been good to us. We patrol on Sundays and Public Holidays between late September and late April. In addition – during the summer school holidays – we also cover some Saturdays. Patrols run between 10am and 5pm during the shoulder season and 9am to 6pm during the peak season.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO BE A SURF LIFESAVER?

The Bronze Medallion is the foundation award for most lifesaving activities, and it is the minimum requirement to be an active Surf Life Saver. To obtain this award, you must be over the age of 15 and demonstrate proficiency in surf awareness, survival, patrol and rescue procedures, emergency care plus anatomy and physiology. Prerequisite for the Bronze Medallion is a certain level of physical fitness. You will be required to complete a 400-metre swim in nine minutes or less. Once this has been completed, qualified and experienced instructors provided by the club will train you to the level of a proficient Surf Life Saver.

CAN I JOIN WINDANG SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB WITHOUT DOING A BRONZE MEDALLION?

If you are not yet 15 years of age, you can obtain the Surf Rescue Certificate. You can achieve this award from the age of 13, and its completion will give you the status of Probationary Surf Life Saver. The award will provide candidates skills in surf rescue, first aid, patient management and resuscitation as well as knowledge about safety and surf awareness.
